Als offers two worlds close together. Kegnæs on the open side is a well-known surf spot, where a decent wave runs in onshore wind. If you prefer it calmer, head to Hørup Hav, a sheltered side arm of the Flensburg Fjord with flat water, ideal for your first attempts.
Our take: Als is our insider tip for a short trip. You are there in a good hour from the border, yet it feels like you have really got away, Danish calm, wide beaches and a spot for every ability.
