Als: Kegnæs and Hørup Hav

Just across the German border lies the Danish island of Als, and it is closer than you think. Kegnæs offers proper surf, while Hørup Hav, a side arm of the Flensburg Fjord, has flat, sheltered water for beginners. Perfect for a weekend hop across the border.

Wave on the Danish coast
Kegnæs works as a surf spot in onshore wind.

Als offers two worlds close together. Kegnæs on the open side is a well-known surf spot, where a decent wave runs in onshore wind. If you prefer it calmer, head to Hørup Hav, a sheltered side arm of the Flensburg Fjord with flat water, ideal for your first attempts.

Our take: Als is our insider tip for a short trip. You are there in a good hour from the border, yet it feels like you have really got away, Danish calm, wide beaches and a spot for every ability.

Getting there and staying over

The drive from the border takes only about an hour, and there are campsites on Als and around Hørup Hav. Ideal for a long weekend.
