Frequently asked questions about watersports on the Baltic

Watersports on the Baltic Sea

Getting started & basics

Which watersport suits me?

It depends on budget, time and type. An honest comparison is in Kite, wing or windsurf? , and an overview of all sports on the Water Sports page.

Am I too old to start?

No. Watersports are not a question of age but of attitude and technique. The pull comes through the harness, board and foil from the gear, not from raw muscle. Many start at 40, 50 or later.

Do I need to be a good swimmer?

You should swim safely in open water, and a buoyancy or impact vest is standard while learning. Panic in deep water is a bigger enemy than a slow personal best.

Do I need a lot of strength or fitness?

Less than most people think. The pull is transferred through the harness to your hips, and steering takes little force. Basic fitness and balance help more than muscle.

How dangerous is all this?
