Buying a used kite without getting burned

A complete new kite set can quickly run into four figures. No wonder many people start out with used gear, and that is a good idea too, as long as you know what to look out for. With the right eye you easily save half, without cutting corners on safety. Here are the most important points.

Where to find good used gear

At the end of the season, rental stations often sell off checked gear cheaply.

There are quite a few good sources. The classifieds portals are the classic, and here it is best to look regionally and locally. Particularly worth recommending are the surf shops and schools that sell off their rental and test gear at the end of the season. That has been checked by experts and has often only been ridden for a few days. In the scene’s forums and groups you will also find fair offers from people who have treated their gear well.

What to check on the kite

On the kite itself there are a few things to check. Look at the year of manufacture, ideally it should not be older than three to five years, otherwise the safety systems are outdated. Feel the cloth: firm, crisp material indicates little use, soft and faded material a lot of sun. Check for tears and patches. And most importantly: pump the kite up before buying and let it sit for half an hour, it must not lose any air.

These parts you should rather buy new

Do not save on the bar, lines and safety system, your life depends on them.

One clear rule to finish with, one you should remember: on safety-critical parts you do not save. The bar, lines, the depower and safety system as well as the leash are best bought new, or at least have them checked by a professional. In an emergency your life depends on them. Boards, kites and accessories, on the other hand, are perfectly fine used. That way you get the best of both worlds: a cheap entry and still being out there safely.

Buying used in water sports is a smart move if you go about it with your eyes open. Check the gear calmly, be uncompromising on safety, and you will ride cheaply and carefree. If you are unsure, take someone experienced along. We are happy to help you check your dream kite.
