Darß and Zingst: gentle learning on the Bodden

Wide, shallow Bodden water

The Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula is one of the most beautiful stretches of the Baltic coast, and a dream for kiting too, especially for beginners. On one side the sheltered Bodden with their shallow water, on the other the open sea with waves. Plus pure nature. A spot you really should have seen, with a few important rules.

Bodden water, shallow and sheltered

Kiter in the shallow standing spot
The Bodden are wide, shallow standing spots, ideal for the first runs.

The Bodden, the shallow waters behind the peninsula, are ideal learning spots. At Born, Dabitz and Saal you have huge shallows where you can stand comfortably, plus mostly smooth water and clean wind coming across the flat landscape. There are schools right on the Bodden. Here you can practise in peace, without battling waves or deep water. Getting started hardly gets more relaxed than this.

The sea side for waves

Anyone who already rides confidently switches to the sea side. On the outer beaches of Wustrow, Prerow and Zingst you get real Baltic waves with onshore wind from north to north-east. That is more demanding, but great fun if you want to try your first jumps or wave riding. So the peninsula offers both in one place, a shallow learning spot and a wave playground, depending on what you feel like right now.

National park means consideration

Kite above shallow water
Large parts are national park, kiting is only allowed in the school areas.

An important point: large parts of the Bodden belong to the Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft National Park. That means kiting is far from allowed everywhere, on the Bodden side often only in designated school areas. Keep at least two hundred metres’ distance from the reed belt, because birds breed and rest there. When in doubt, ask the local school, they know exactly where you are allowed to ride. That way this special spot is preserved for the future too.

Darß and Zingst are a gift for water sports lovers: gentle Bodden water for learning, waves on the sea side and all around one of the most beautiful natural landscapes on the coast. Treat it with respect, and it gives you unforgettable days in return. We are happy to tell you which Bodden areas are open.
