Turquoise water, white houses, and a wind that blows reliably all summer long: the Greek Cyclades are a dream destination for kiters. Above all Naxos with its Mikri Vigla spot. Anyone who wants to combine water sports with Greek island flair is exactly right here. Here is what you can look forward to.
The Meltemi, Greece’s summer wind

The heart of it all is the Meltemi, a dry northerly wind that sweeps across the Aegean in summer. From May to October it blows regularly, strongest in July and August, then often at five to six Beaufort. That makes the Cyclades a reliable summer spot, while the Baltic is going through a lull. The wind is mostly clean and easy to forecast, ideal then for moving the summer holidays out onto the water.
Mikri Vigla and the other spots
The best-known spot is Mikri Vigla on Naxos, a bay with a shallow-water side for practising and a wave side for the advanced, plus turquoise-blue water. But Naxos is not alone: on Kos and Rhodes you find family-friendly standing spots, and Prasonisi on Rhodes is a real classic with its sandspit. And if you like it windy, head to Karpathos. There is something for every level on the islands.
More than just kiting

The lovely thing about Greece is that it offers far more than wind. Between the sessions, island life beckons: secluded bays, small villages, good food and the relaxed manner of the islanders. The non-kiting companion is guaranteed not to get bored here, and island hopping is easy to add on. That turns the kite trip into a proper summer holiday, one you will remember for a long time.
The Cyclades combine reliable summer wind with the Greek way of life, a combination that is addictive. Naxos is the perfect starting point from which you can discover the other islands. Pack light gear in high summer, the Meltemi brings plenty of power. We are happy to help you plan your island trip.
