E-foil: flying silently with no wind at all

Foiler gliding over the water

Imagine gliding silently across the water, lifting off and flying, and all of it without wind, without waves, simply at the push of a button. That is exactly what the e-foil makes possible, perhaps the most spectacular newcomer in water sports. What lies behind it, who it suits and what it costs, we clear up here.

How an e-foil works

A small motor under the board drives you, the hydrofoil lifts you out of the water.

An e-foil is essentially a foilboard with its own drive. Under the board sits, as with normal foiling, a hydrofoil on a mast. Added to that is a small electric motor with a propeller, fed from a battery in the board. Steering is done via a wireless remote control in your hand: you give it throttle, the board picks up speed, and beyond a certain pace the wing lifts you out of the water. Then you hover along almost noiselessly.

Who it is worth it for

The great appeal: you do not depend on anything. No wind, no waves, no tow boat, all you need is water. That makes the e-foil ideal for everyone who wants to experience the foil feeling without first learning to kite or surf, and for windless days when nothing else works. With a little practice the entry is mastered faster than with classic foiling, because the drive provides the speed. You still need balance and feel, though.

What it costs and where you ride

The fun comes at a price, many try it at a rental first.

To be honest: this pleasure is not cheap. An e-foil costs several thousand euros depending on the model, and the battery needs charging and care. That is why most people start at a rental or in a course before they think about buying. When riding, the rule is: keep your distance from swimmers, the propeller and the wing are not to be taken lightly. And inform yourself about the rules, because motorised boards are not allowed everywhere and not in every zone.

The e-foil is toy, sports gear and a promise of the future all in one: flying silently whenever you want. It is expensive, but the feeling is unique. Try it at a rental first before you invest, and enjoy the wind-independent flight. We are happy to tell you where you can test it on the coast.

And is it worth buying? We cover that in Buying an e-foil.
