Flying silently, whenever you want, entirely without wind and waves, at the push of a button. The e-foil makes exactly that possible, and the thought of having such a device in the garage is tempting. But the fun doesn’t come cheap. Is buying one really worth it? We go through the honest questions before you spend a lot of money. How an e-foil actually rides you can read under E-Foil fahren.
What an e-foil costs

First the hard truth: an e-foil is expensive. Depending on the brand and equipment, prices range from several thousand to over ten thousand euros. On top of that comes the battery, often the most expensive single part, and many people sooner or later buy a spare battery so the day isn’t already over after an hour. Also factor in a charger, a transport bag and, over time, wear parts. An e-foil is therefore not a spontaneous purchase but a real investment.
First rent, then decide
Our most important advice: don’t buy blindly. Try an e-foil first at a rental or in a course, ideally several models. That way you’ll notice whether the feeling really grabs you and how quickly you get the hang of it before you invest. A purchase is worth it above all if you ride often, would otherwise stay home on many windless days, and have space to store and transport it. Anyone who only wants to get on the water twice a year is far better served by renting.
What to look out for when buying

If it really is going to be one of your own, a few things count more than the price. Pay attention to the battery range and whether there is a spare battery. Choose the board size according to your skill, bigger and calmer for the start, smaller and more agile for later. Think about the weight, because you also want to carry and load the board. Also important are service, spare parts and warranty close to you; a battery is not something you just repair yourself. And clarify the rules: an e-foil is motorised and not allowed everywhere and not in every zone, in some places it needs insurance or a licence plate. The basics of flying itself you’ll find under Foilen lernen.
An e-foil is a wonderful toy and an expensive one at that. For anyone who rides often and loves the wind-independent flight, the purchase can be worth it. Everyone else rides more cheaply and more flexibly with rentals and courses. Try it out, do the honest math, and then decide at your leisure.
