Parawing simply explained

Parawing, that’s the word dropping in every foil session right now. A tiny wing that fits in your backpack and still pulls you across the water. Sounds like magic, but it’s simple physics, and the reason so many foilers are getting excited right now. We’ll calmly explain what a Parawing is, what it can do and who it’s worth it for.

What a Parawing is

Just fabric and lines, handled with both hands, that’s the whole principle.

A Parawing is a soft handheld wing, somewhere between a Wing and a miniature paraglider. Instead of a rigid frame like the Wing, it has just a light piece of fabric on thin lines that you steer with both hands. That’s exactly the trick: no bulky frame, nothing inflatable. The Parawing folds down small in seconds and tucks into your hand or a pocket while you keep riding. After that you simply keep foiling with nothing at all.

What it can do and who it’s for

The Parawing’s big moment comes in the Downwind. You use it to get up onto the foil in the first place, then stow it away and let the wind and the swell carry you along as you pump, much like SUP foiling. Because it’s so light and small, you take it everywhere, even on hikes to remote spots. Honestly, though, it’s not a beginner’s tool: you should be able to foil confidently before you take on the Parawing. For experienced foilers, on the other hand, it opens up a whole new, minimalist playground.

Parawing, Wing or Kite?

Related to the Wing, but noticeably lighter and completely packable.

The three are similar, but they feel different. The Wing is inflated and always in your hand, stable and beginner-friendly, an overview of the models is in our Wing comparison. The Kite brings the most power, but it needs space and setup. The Parawing is the lightweight specialist: packable, in love with Downwind, wonderfully uncomplicated on the go, but nothing for your first foil attempts. Which Foil fits underneath is shown in the Frontwing overview.

The Parawing is no replacement for a Wing or a Kite, but a new tool for everyone who likes it light, small and free. It’s still a niche trend, but one with plenty of future. If you foil confidently and fancy some Downwind, it’s worth a closer look.
