Sweden for weekend kiters: Skanör and Falsterbo

Kitesurfer in front of an autumnal coast in Scandinavia

Anyone living on the German Baltic has a kite paradise almost on their doorstep that many do not have on their radar at all: southern Sweden. Across the Öresund Bridge you are in Skanör and Falsterbo within a few hours, one of the most wind-reliable and beautiful spots in Scandinavia. Perfect for a long weekend.

Across the bridge into the wind paradise

Sandy beach on the Scandinavian coast
Wide sandy beaches and skerries, southern Sweden is a dream spot.

The southern tip of Sweden, the peninsula at Skanör and Falsterbo, juts far out into the Baltic. That means the wind almost always blows from one side or another here. Add to that kilometres of flat sandy beaches and an almost Scandinavian-Mediterranean atmosphere, which is why the area is also called the Swedish Hamptons. From northern Germany you drive there across the Öresund Bridge in around four to four and a half hours.

Skanör and Falsterbo, almost always wind

The spot has something for everyone. The shallow north side is ideal for beginners and freestylers, smooth water and clean wind. On the south side a wave builds up with southerly swell, and then the wave riders get their money’s worth too. Because the peninsula lies so exposed, the wind yield is excellent. In high summer it can get crowded, though, and then you share the lovely spot with many others.

When and for whom

Calm shore in the north
In summer it is crowded, in spring and autumn windier and quieter.

The best time is, as on the Baltic, spring and autumn, when it is at its windiest and at the same time emptier. In summer it is warmer and more family-friendly, but fuller. Think of a warm wetsuit, the Swedish north is a touch fresher. The spot is suitable for all levels, and the shallow side in particular is also very doable for beginners. A rewarding short trip that feels like a proper holiday.

Skanör and Falsterbo are proof that the next top spot is sometimes only a bridge away. Plenty of wind, beautiful beaches and Scandinavian flair, all doable in a single long weekend. Pack the car and the warm gear, and discover the Swedish side of the Baltic. We are happy to give you tips for planning.
