Between Kiel and Flensburg lies a spot that often stands in the shadow of the big names, even though it is really good: the Eckernförder Bucht. Sheltered, versatile and with spots on both shores, so that something works in almost any wind. A fine spot for relaxed sessions, which we will briefly introduce to you.
A bay for almost any wind

The big advantage of the Eckernförder Bucht is its shape. Because it is surrounded by land and has spots on both sides, you find a suitable little place in almost any wind direction. The bay works well with south-west to north-west, with easterly wind it blows freely in, and with east there is even a funnel effect with extra wind in some places. If the wind sits unfavourably, you simply switch from the south to the north shore.
The spots from Eckernförde to Damp
Several spots line the bay. Eckernförde itself and Karlsminde on the north shore, plus Damp and Waabs as the easternmost points with a surf station. The water is mostly flat to slightly choppy, ideal for relaxed practising and cruising. Schools and rentals are available in the region, and getting started is uncomplicated. For beginners and the advanced alike this is a rewarding spot that is rarely overcrowded.
A relaxed spot with charm

What makes the Eckernförder Bucht special is its calm character. Things are more relaxed here than at the big hotspots, and the places around it have charm. Eckernförde, with its old town and harbour, invites you to stroll, so that your companion has a lovely day too. That way you combine a casual session with a nice outing on one of the most beautiful corners of the Schleswig-Holstein coast.
The Eckernförder Bucht is an underrated gem: sheltered, versatile and relaxed. Anyone who wants to avoid the crowds and still ride in almost any wind is in the right place. Pack your gear, look for the shore with the better wind, and enjoy a calm spot with charm. We are happy to tell you which spot is working today.
