Kayak and SUP tours: enjoying the Baltic at a slow pace

Kayaks on turquoise water

Not every day on the water has to be about action. Sometimes you simply want to enjoy the coast in peace, watch birds, glide into a quiet bay. That is exactly what the kayak and stand-up paddling are made for, and the Baltic, with its Bodden and fjords, is a dream spot for it. An invitation to slow down for once.

When the wind takes a break

Paddler on calm water
On windless days, kayak and SUP are the perfect alternative.

There are those days when not a breath of wind stirs and the kite or sail stays in the car. That is exactly when the kayak and SUP come into their own. Both need no wind, only your muscles, and they open up the coast to you in a whole new, quiet way. You reach shallow corners no boat fits into, glide silently through the water and are right in the middle of nature. For the windless summer days this is the perfect answer.

The most beautiful spots for tours

The Baltic has plenty to offer paddlers. The sheltered Bodden around Rügen and the Darß are ideal, as are the fjords near Flensburg, Eckernförde and Kiel, where the water stays calm. Here you paddle along reed belts, watch birds and discover little beaches you would never reach from land. A sunset tour on the SUP or a leisurely kayak tour with a picnic, those are the sessions you remember.

What you should watch out for

Out on the water
Life jacket, weather check and offshore wind, that applies to paddling too.

Even with calm paddling, safety is part of it. A life jacket or buoyancy aid is a must, and on the SUP also the leash that connects you to the board. Before the tour, check the weather and above all the wind direction: offshore wind, which pushes from the land out to sea, is the biggest danger here too, because it carries you out further than you would like, and fast. Stay in sheltered waters and tell someone where you are going.

Kayak and SUP are the quiet side of water sports, perfect for windless days and for everyone who wants to experience the coast in slow motion for once. Pack a picnic, find yourself a sheltered bay, and let yourself drift. You will find lovely tour spots and safe entry points in our spot guides.
