Not every kite spot lies in the middle of nowhere. On the Mecklenburg coast there are two spots that combine watersports with seaside-resort flair: Warnemünde right at the gates of Rostock and Boltenhagen with its wide sandy beach. Here you kite against a beautiful backdrop, but you should know a few rules.
Warnemünde, a city spot with rules

Warnemünde is probably the best-known city spot on the Baltic; a large kitesurf event even takes place here. The wide outer beach works in onshore wind from west through north to east. Important: in the high season, kiting is restricted to a particular zone, around beach access 13. Stick to it, otherwise there is trouble with the bathing operation. For advanced riders it is a great spot with the big city at your back.
Boltenhagen, a wide sandy beach
A little further west lies Boltenhagen, a classic Baltic seaside resort with a long, gently shelving sandy beach. The spot works well in onshore wind from north to northwest and then brings chop and a small wave. The beach is wide, the entry is straightforward, and the seaside resort around it invites you to stay. A lovely spot for relaxed cruising, especially when you have the family along.
There is plenty to do around them

The lovely thing about both places is everything around them. Pier, promenade, cafés, and shops are right by the beach, so the non-kiting company gets something out of it too. In Warnemünde the old harbour beckons with its fish rolls, in Boltenhagen the calm spa-town atmosphere. That way the kite session becomes a complete day out, well spent as a couple or with the family.
Boltenhagen and Warnemünde show that watersports and holiday flair go together. Kiting against the seaside-resort backdrop, then a stroll along the promenade, there is something to that. In Warnemünde watch out for the zones, and then nothing stands in the way of a lovely day. Which of the two runs better in your wind, we are happy to tell you.
