Bornholm, the Danish sunshine island in the middle of the Baltic, is a little universe of its own. In the south, flat, knee-deep water for learning, in the north near Gudhjem the rocky coast with waves. Add granite cliffs, smokehouses and the feeling of being really far away, yet just one ferry ride from home.

South flat, north waves

Bornholm is small enough that you can chase the wind around it. In the south, near Dueodde for instance, the water close to the beach is only knee-deep, perfect for beginners. In the north around Gudhjem, wind meets rock and waves, which is something for the experienced. So there is almost always a suitable side to be found.
Our take: Bornholm is worth the trip even without wind. The island is beautiful, the food superb, and when the wind comes you have spots for every ability. We come for the surfing and stay for the island.
Getting there and staying over
You reach Bornholm by ferry, for example from Sassnitz on Rügen, or via Sweden. There are campsites all around the island, many with a view of the water.
