Cape Town is the strong-wind mecca of the southern hemisphere , the powerful “Cape Doctor” against the Table Mountain backdrop, plus the flat Langebaan lagoon. When it’s winter here, it’s peak season there. A dream destination , but one for riders who already handle themselves.
Profile
| Best time to visit | November to March (southern summer) |
| Wind | strong south-easter, the “Cape Doctor”, often 25 knots and more |
| Water | Atlantic, cold despite the sun , a thicker wetsuit needed |
| Level | advanced (strong wind, waves); flat water at Langebaan is calmer |
| Area | Blouberg (Table Mountain view), Langebaan lagoon |
The area
Bloubergstrand is the postcard: strong wind, waves and Table Mountain right in view. If you prefer it flatter and calmer, drive an hour north to the Langebaan lagoon , standing-depth water, ideal for practice and downwinders too.
Who & when
From November to March the Cape Doctor blows most reliably , and hard. This is a destination for advanced riders who enjoy strong wind and waves. Beginners are far better off in the Langebaan lagoon than at wind-lashed Blouberg.
Good to know
Despite the sun, the Atlantic here is cold , plan for a warmer wetsuit. The wind is serious, so ride with respect and the right gear. And as everywhere on the open sea: heed local signs and the locals.
Our impression
Kiting with Table Mountain behind you is once-in-a-lifetime stuff. If you handle strong wind confidently, you get conditions and scenery found almost nowhere else , plus summer while the heating is on at home.
