The long harbour breakwaters and offshore reefs order the waves in Hanstholm into clean sets, often more powerful than next door. It works best in a west to northwest, sideshore. This is wave riding and windsurfing for riders who can read surf and current with confidence.
Our take: Hanstholm has something wild about it for us. When it’s on, powerful waves stand up here, but the spot demands respect. We come when we really want the wave, and we go into the water with humility.
Part of Cold Hawaii
Hanstholm and Klitmøller are only a few kilometres apart and complement each other: depending on the wind direction and wave size, sometimes one spot runs better, sometimes the other. This density of good wave spots makes Thy the first address for wave hunters in Denmark.
Getting there and staying over
Hanstholm is reachable by car via the North Jutland route, with car parks at the harbour and beach and campsites in the area. Whether conditions are right is something you judge with the Wind Check and a look at the water.
