Hohwacht

Hohwacht

The Hohwachter Bucht faces north, and that is what makes it special: when the north wind flattens the swell elsewhere, a clean wave rolls into the bay here. Towards Hohwacht on the left there is also a large standing-depth area, so it is a spot for both, calm practising and a bit of wave.

Standing-depth and wave

Because it faces north, the bay works above all with winds from the northwest to northeast. The wind does not get quite as strong here as at the bay exits near Heiligenhafen, but a pleasant wave pushes into the bay instead. If you like it flat, keep to the left towards Hohwacht; if you are after wave, head towards Weissenhaus.

Our impression: Hohwacht is the spot for those who want more than just shallow water, but do not yet fancy the rough Heiligenhafen. A friendly wave, plenty of beach, and a few campsites right behind it.

Getting there and sleeping

In Hohwacht and Behrensdorf there are campsites close to the beach, ideal for a weekend with wave. From here Heiligenhafen is also quickly reached, should the wind suit it there.
