Portugal is the Atlantic at its purest , strong wind, real waves and plenty of sun. Around Lisbon the reliable Nortada blows in summer, plus there are flat lagoons for learning. A spot for anyone who loves wind and waves.
Profile
| Best time to visit | May to September (Nortada most reliable) |
| Wind | strong northerly (Nortada), often strong in the afternoon |
| Water | Atlantic, rather cool , plan for a wetsuit |
| Level | advanced (wind & waves); flat-water lagoons for beginners |
| Area | Guincho near Lisbon (waves), Lagoa de Óbidos (flat water) |
The area
Guincho north-west of Lisbon is the classic: strong wind, Atlantic waves and a rugged, beautiful backdrop. If you prefer it flatter, head to the Lagoa de Óbidos , a sheltered lagoon with standing-depth water, ideal for learning and relaxed sessions.
Who & when
From May to September the Nortada is most reliable. The experienced love the wave spots, beginners are better off in the lagoons. Handy: a short flight, lots of sun and plenty of culture for the windless days.
Good to know
The Atlantic is fresh even in summer , plan for a warmer wetsuit. Open beaches can get serious (current, waves), so ride with respect and heed local advice.
Our impression
Portugal is honest Atlantic watersports with character , wind, waves, sun and great food. If you already ride confidently you get reliable conditions here; beginners find their calm starting point in the lagoons.
