Rømø has one of the widest beaches in Europe, miles of firm sand that you are allowed to drive on by car. No wonder the island ranks among Denmark’s big water sports addresses: its own dedicated area for kiters and windsurfers, plus flat water or a wave depending on the tide. Beach as far as the eye can see
The beach is so wide and firm that you drive almost down to the water by car, no carrying of gear. There is a dedicated area for kiters and windsurfers, where you have endless room. Depending on wind and tide you find shallow standing water or a proper surf.
Our impression: Rømø is water sports on a grand scale. That open space, the firm sand, the car almost at the spot, it has something addictive about it. We come for the days when wind and tide play together perfectly.
Take the tides seriously
The Wadden Sea is no playground for carelessness. The flood comes in fast and unpredictably across the flat beach, more than one person has found their car in the salt water. Rule of thumb: safer on a rising than on a falling tide. Check the tide calendar before you launch.
Getting there and sleeping
Rømø is easily reached by car across the causeway, and there are plenty of campsites and holiday homes. The island pairs nicely with a Wadden Sea holiday. Whether there is enough wind today is told by our wind check.
