Behind the Fischland-Darß peninsula lies the Saaler Bodden, one of the largest shallow-water areas on the Baltic Sea. Waist-deep, calm, huge. Out front on the Baltic sits Dierhagen with its sandy beach and sandbars. The bodden for learning, the Baltic for the waves, both in one place.

Bodden and Baltic

The Saaler Bodden is a dream for beginners, a huge, waist-deep lake sheltered from the Baltic swell. Here you learn in peace. On the Baltic side at Dierhagen there is a sandy beach with sandbars that turns onshore with west and southwest winds and offers a bit of wave. In May and June an easterly often builds up a lovely thermal breeze.
Our take: the double act of bodden and Baltic is what makes Fischland-Darß so strong. Practise on the flat water in the morning, head to the waves in the afternoon, all without driving far. For families with mixed ability it is hard to beat.
Getting there and staying over
In Dierhagen and Wustrow there are campsites and pitches close to the water. Mind the rules on the bodden: in some spots a shuttle takes you out, and launching directly in the harbour is off limits.
