Spain is more than just Tarifa. The Atlantic north around Galicia shows a rougher, wilder side: strong winds, cool water and honest waves. Anyone looking for a challenge while still appreciating calmer bays will find a varied spot here, away from the busy crowds.

The area
The north coast and Galicia define this part of Spain: a rugged Atlantic north with strong wind and real waves. Between the exposed stretches of coast you keep finding sheltered bays with calmer flat water. So you get both here , demanding wave spots and more relaxed places to practise.
Who & when
The trip pays off most from spring to autumn. The waves suit advanced riders in particular, while the flat-water bays also allow for calmer sessions. If you do not mind strong wind and cool water, you are rewarded with an honest Atlantic spot.
Good to know
Spain has several very different regions. The south with Tarifa and the Canary Islands with their reliable trade winds are worlds of their own and should not be confused with the Atlantic north. If you want the rugged north, plan for Galicia and the north coast , if you want warmth and trade winds, look south or to the islands.
Our impression
The Atlantic north is a spot with character: strong wind, waves and cool water make demands but reward you with a genuine outdoor experience. The mix of wild spots and calmer bays makes the region versatile. For us, an exciting contrast to the sunny south.
