Thorsminde sits on a narrow spit, just 900 metres wide, between the Nissum Fjord and the North Sea, a textbook double spot. On the fjord side you’ll find absolute flat water, shallow enough to stand for several hundred metres, perfect for learning. Over the dune the North Sea waits with waves. Both in one place.

Flat water without end
The fjord side of Thorsminde is a dream for beginners: depending on the wind direction the standing area reaches several hundred metres out, the water is mirror-flat to slightly choppy and free of stones. Further out, small fjord waves build up for your first jumps. You can hardly learn anywhere safer.
Our take: For us Thorsminde is the perfect double bill: practise on the flat fjord side in the morning, then cross the dune to the North Sea wave in the afternoon. Anyone who wants both in one day without driving far is in exactly the right place here.

Over the dune to the wave

The spit is only about 900 metres wide, so the North Sea is right next door. In an onshore westerly the surf runs there, something for the more experienced who fancy a wave. So you choose the side to match your skill and your mood, sheltered fjord or open North Sea.
Getting there and staying over
In Thorsminde a campsite sits right by the water, with car parks at the fjord and the beach. The village lives off watersports, so everything is wonderfully straightforward. Whether there’s enough wind today is something the Wind Check tells you.

Thorsminde is flat water and North Sea wave, separated only by a dune. You’ll find more areas in our spot overview.
