Thyborøn lies on the channel that links the Nissum Bredning with the North Sea, right at the northern tip of West Jutland. Behind the coast the shallow Nissum Bredning opens up with wide standing water for learning, while the North Sea and channel side, with its wind, current and waves, draws the experienced. An area with two faces.

Two faces
The Nissum Bredning is shallow and wide, a good standing area for practising in many wind directions. The channel and North Sea side is something else entirely: in a southerly a long stone breakwater at Agger beach lines up clean waves, but the strong current through the channel makes the spot demanding. The Bredning first, then, once you’re confident, the channel.
Our take: Thyborøn is pure contrast. We love that beginners and experienced wave riders each find their spot here in a small area, you just have to judge honestly where you belong.

Respect the current

Where the Bredning and the North Sea are joined by the narrow channel, a strong current builds up. That’s nothing for beginners. Stay in the shallow Bredning to learn, and only go to the channel and the breakwaters once you can judge current with confidence.
