For kiters, Fehmarn is what the Alps are for skiers. Around eighty kilometres of coast, about twenty spots, and the right beach for almost every wind direction. Wherever the wind blows from, somewhere on the island it’s working. Here is the overview, so you know where to go.
One island, a spot for every wind direction

The secret of Fehmarn is its shape. The island has coast in every compass direction, so with a southwest wind you find the south coast and with northeast the north coast. When the wind shifts, you simply switch beaches instead of cancelling the day. That is exactly what makes the island so reliable: you drive there and almost always make it onto the water.
For a first overview, three corners are enough. The south around Orth with lots of shallow water, the north coast at the Grüner Brink with waves in easterly wind, and the wind-exposed tips for the powerful days.
The best spots for learning
Anyone still practising wants shallow, standing-depth water, and Fehmarn has plenty of it. Gold near Orth is the classic, a huge standing area where on good days half the school stands and grins. The side at Wulfener Hals is ideal for beginners too. A note on the side: at some learning spots kiting is regulated by time, at the lagoon at Wulfener Hals, for example, often only from the evening. A glance at the signs on site saves trouble.
Where there are waves and action

Once you ride confidently, it gets more exciting. At the Grüner Brink in the north you get a nice wave in easterly wind, and at the tips like Markelsdorf or Westermarkelsdorf it breaks properly in southwest. More skill is required here, the water gets deep quickly and the wind is often strong.
Important at the Grüner Brink: this is a nature reserve. Here you only kite in the designated zones, so the spot stays open for the next season too. Consideration costs nothing and keeps us all in the game.
Fehmarn has long since stopped being an insider tip, but that is exactly why it is so good: schools, rental shops and spots for every level are all close together. Pack your gear, check the wind direction, and find the right side. Which one it is today, a glance at the wind direction and our wind check will tell you.
