There is one place where kiters from all over Europe come together: Tarifa, the southern tip of Spain, where the Atlantic and the Mediterranean meet. The wind blows here on roughly three hundred days a year. For many, Tarifa is their first big kite trip. Here is what you can look forward to and what to keep an eye on.
Why there is always wind here

Tarifa sits right in the Strait of Gibraltar, and the strait acts like a nozzle: the wind is squeezed together and accelerated. That is why the wind stands here so reliably, on most days of the year. Add to that miles of sandy beach such as Los Lances and Valdevaqueros, a huge kite scene, schools, gear, and a buzzing nightlife. Here, watersports are not a hobby but a way of life.
Levante or Poniente, that makes the day
Two winds shape the day. The Levante comes from the east, is powerful, and can blow hard for days on end, which is more for the experienced. The Poniente blows from the west, is cleaner and steadier, and so the better friend for a beginner. Every school and every app will tell you which one is running. The water is mostly open and slightly choppy, so Tarifa is not a classic flat-water spot.
When to go as a beginner

For your first Tarifa trip, spring and autumn are ideal, roughly April to June or September to October. It is warm then, but not crowded, and the wind is often a bit more manageable than at the height of summer. Book a school with beginner courses; they know the calm corners and the right wind. And remember the VDWS licence, which lets you rent gear on site without any fuss.
Tarifa is a must for anyone who loves the sport, and it is very doable for beginners too, as long as you pick the right wind and the right time. Just an hour by plane plus a short drive, and you are standing in Europe’s wind capital. We are happy to help you plan your first trip.
