Egypt on the Red Sea: the Winter Learning Mecca

When winter rules the Baltic, many kiters pack their gear and fly to the Red Sea. Egypt is perhaps the best value destination for the cold season: reliable wind, warm water, shallow lagoons, and only about four and a half hours by plane. Ideal for carrying on learning through winter or simply getting started.

Why Egypt is so beginner-friendly

Shallow, wide lagoons and warm water, a learning spot can hardly be better.

The Red Sea is made for getting started. Many spots have wide, shallow lagoons where you can stand while there is already plenty of wind further out. The water is clear and pleasantly warm even in winter, and the north wind comes reliably and mostly clean. On top of that there are countless schools with German-speaking instructors. Anyone who wants to make real progress in a week is in exactly the right place here.

El Gouna, Soma Bay and co.

There are a few names you should know. El Gouna is the classic, a landscape of lagoons with a learning-mecca reputation and plenty going on around it. Soma Bay scores with a huge, shallow sand lagoon, ideal for beginners and warm all year round. Hurghada offers many spots and islands for kite safaris, and Dahab on the Gulf of Aqaba is the quieter, slightly more alternative corner with a mountain backdrop. There is something for every taste.

Best time and getting there

From March to October the wind is most reliable, the winter stays warm.

You have wind here almost all year, most reliably from March to October. But Egypt is especially popular in winter, because it stays warm while the heating is running back home. The flight takes only about four and a half hours, and package deals with hotel and school make planning easy. Remember the VDWS licence so you can rent gear on site without any fuss.

Egypt is probably the easiest way to escape the Baltic winter while making huge progress. Warm flat water, reliable wind, and a short trip, it hardly gets better for learning. If you like, add a few dives or a desert excursion. We are happy to help you choose the right spot.
