Right across from Fehmarn lies a spot that many underrate: Heiligenhafen with the Graswarder. Large areas of flat water, a gently shelving sandy beach, and depending on the wind either smooth water or a nice wave. A spot where beginners and advanced riders alike become happy.
The Graswarder, wide flat water

The Graswarder is the narrow spit of land off Heiligenhafen and the region’s main kite spot. Here you have a lot of flat water in which you can stand well and practise. The entry over the sandy beach is gentle, and there is enough room that you do not get in each other’s way. For beginners this is a relaxed spot that creates little stress and allows quick progress.
Waves in a northwesterly, freestyle in an easterly
The lovely thing about the Graswarder is that it changes its face depending on the wind. In a northwesterly, a nice wave builds up on the sandbank, ideal for everyone who wants to try their first jumps or wave rides. In an easterly, by contrast, the water turns smooth, and then it is time for freestyle and relaxed practice. So you find the right playground in almost any wind, and it never gets boring.
Nature conservation and good neighbourliness

One important note: the Graswarder is a nature reserve, a valuable resting and breeding area for birds. Kiting takes place only in the designated areas; the neighbouring Steinwarder, for example, is reserved for the windsurfers. Stick to the zones and the signage, and the spot stays open and everyone benefits. Consideration is the key here.
Heiligenhafen and the Graswarder are an underrated jewel of the Baltic: lots of flat water, varied conditions, and a relaxed togetherness. Whether first runs or first waves, you will find your place here. Which zone runs in which wind, we are happy to tell you.
