Holnis is the northernmost tip of the German mainland, a peninsula at the mouth of the Flensburg Fjord. A long, gently sloping sandy beach, with meadows and a large nature reserve behind it. You can wade out up to 150 metres here into standing-depth water, exactly the playground where beginners build confidence and foilers enjoy the easterly days.

Shallow water, wide beach
The beach slopes so gently that it feels like you stand forever. For up to 150 metres the water reaches only to your hips, ideal for practising the water start and gybes in peace. There is hardly any swell, more a light chop when the easterly pushes across the fjord.
Our impression: Holnis is a textbook easterly spot. When the fjord plays out its venturi effect on a southeast wind, it runs clean and steady here, and the wide standing area takes all the stress out of practising. We come for the calm learning days and stay for the open space.
Take nature protection seriously
A nature reserve of around 400 hectares stretches across the peninsula, a breeding and resting ground for many birds. Beyond the long stone jetty to the northeast of the spot, kiting is off limits. Stick to the marked areas and Holnis stays a pleasure for everyone, for athletes and for nature alike.
Getting there and the school
Holnis lies north of Glücksburg, with parking and beach access available. Right at the spot there is a small kite and windsurf school, plus wing foiling and SUP tours. You will find campsites around Glücksburg and the fjord. Whether there is enough easterly today is answered by our wind check.
