When the local spots are not delivering for once, it is worth looking across the border. Hvide Sande in West Jutland is one of Denmark’s most popular kite spots, and for good reason: here you have flat fjord water and North Sea wave right next to each other. You can be there in a good four hours.
Fjord and North Sea in one place

What makes Hvide Sande special is its location on a narrow spit of land. On one side lies the Ringkøbing Fjord, a huge, flat standing-depth spot with smooth water. On the other side the North Sea roars in with its wave. So you pick the right side depending on your mood and the wind, without changing location. More choice in the smallest of spaces is rare.
Why it is so good for learning
For beginners, the fjord side in particular is a dream. The water is flat, often only hip-deep, and the wind comes in cleanly across the spit. You can practise in peace and simply stand up again after every fall. On site there are well-equipped centres with a school and rental, so you do not have to lug all the gear along. Anyone who already rides confidently heads over to the North Sea and tries their hand in the wave.
Getting there and the best time

From northern Germany you are there in around four to four and a half hours, so a long weekend is easily worth it. The windiest times are spring and autumn, in summer it is warmer and more family-friendly. Remember a proper wetsuit, the North Sea is fresh even in summer. There is plenty of camping and holiday homes, many right by the water.
Hvide Sande is the perfect first trip abroad for Baltic kiters: close, uncomplicated and with flat water and wave in one package. Pack the car, bring the family along, and try the Danish side of water sports. We are happy to give you tips for planning.
