Not everyone has to drive all the way to Fehmarn or Rügen. On the western Baltic there are two spots that are especially good for relaxed kiting and for learning: the Salzhaff near Rerik and Pelzerhaken in the Bay of Lübeck. Both have plenty of flat water and are quick to reach. Here is a short spot check.
Rerik and the Salzhaff

The Salzhaff behind the Wustrow peninsula is a true all-rounder. On the lagoon side you find smooth, standing-depth flat water, ideal for beginners and for anyone who wants to work on tricks in peace. When the wind turns, you switch to the Baltic side and get chop and small wave. With a west or north-west wind, Pepelow is the better entry point to the lagoon. Add to that a flat sandy beach where families also have a lovely day out.
Pelzerhaken, the big kite bathtub
Pelzerhaken near Neustadt earns its nickname: the flat water reaches several hundred metres out here, almost like a giant bathtub. That is exactly why it is one of the most popular learning spots in Schleswig-Holstein. It works best with a south-west wind, when the wind sits sideways and the water stays smooth. And because the spot is only about an hour from Hamburg, it is perfect for an after-work session.
When it pays off most

As almost everywhere on the Baltic, spring and autumn are the windiest times; summer is warmer but often weaker. Both spots are uncomplicated, well equipped and have schools on site. At the Salzhaff, keep an eye on the nature-reserve areas and keep your distance from the bird zones, then everything stays in good order.
Salzhaff and Pelzerhaken are the easy-going favourites of the western Baltic: flat, relaxed, ideal for learning and for a quick session in between. If you want to know which of the two runs better in today’s wind for you, just ask us.
