The Baltic summer isn’t always kind to us: for days on end the water lies mirror-smooth, and many stand frustrated on the beach waiting for wind that never comes. But it doesn’t have to be that way. With the right gear and a few tricks, you can still get a really good day out of even a little wind, and on some days you need none at all. We’ll show you what’s possible.
First of all: big gear
The simplest lever is more surface area. A big Kite of fourteen to seventeen square metres, a big Wing or a big sail catches every breath of wind and gets you planing when smaller gear is still stuck to the water. The only important thing is to stay honest: beyond a certain point there simply isn’t enough, and then even the biggest square metres won’t help any more. That’s exactly when the next trick comes in.
Foiling is the real light-wind trick

Anyone who regularly wants to head out on weak days can’t get around the foil. A hydrofoil lifts you out of the water at wind strengths where nothing used to work any more, because it brings the board’s drag down to almost zero. Whether Kitefoiling, Wingfoiling or Windsurf foiling: all three need considerably less wind than their classic siblings. You can read what that feels like under Learn to foil, and which foil provides early lift in light wind is shown by the front-wing overview (big front wing = early lift).
And when there’s no wind at all?

Then it’s time for the wind-independent programme, and that’s more than you might think. The most obvious is Stand-Up Paddling: on mirror-smooth water you glide relaxed across the Baltic, ideal for the whole family too. If you like it more sporty, you switch to SUP foiling and ride the smallest swell with a paddle stroke, or to Pumpfoiling, where your own movement alone carries you across the water, entirely without wind and sail. That way the calm day suddenly becomes a training day. Whether anything is happening at all and what’s on today is told to you in advance by our Wind Check.
So light wind isn’t a lost day, but an invitation: get the big gear out, finally practise your foiling, or switch to wind-independent SUP and Pumpfoil. Take a look at the forecast, pack the right board, and enjoy the calm water while the others are still waiting for wind on the beach.
